Application RapidOxy: Production Control of Waxes and Paraffins

Waxes and paraffins have a broad range of production applications for end products due to their versatile characteristics such as melting point, viscosity, hardness etc.

Alternative to Traditional Stability Test Methods

The rapid small scale oxidation tester, RapidOxy, is a fast, safe and user-friendly alternative to traditional stability test methods. The instrument measures the induction period, which can be used as an indication of the oxidation and storage stability. Compared to other oxidation and storage stability test methods, the RapidOxy procedure requires only a small sample to give exact test results in a short period of time.

New Application

The oxidation stability of e.g. Polyethylene Wax (PE wax) provides the customer with information about the quality of their produced waxes.
Two PE waxes with different product qualities (sample A and B) were tested with the program “GREASE” using 4 g of sample in a glass dish at a test temperature of 150 °C. A filling pressure of 700 kPa was chosen and the test was finished when a pressure drop of 10 % below maximum pressure occurred.

Discussion

It has been shown that the oxidation stability of PE wax can be determined with the RapidOxy. The values of the induction period are repeatable as can be seen in the table. Based on the different induction periods the customer is able to draw conclusions about the quality of the produced waxes very easily and swiftly.
