The Topkapi Palace near the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul was once the main residence of the Ottoman sultans. Today, it’s a museum and is in danger of sliding into the sea because of movements in the ground beneath that have also caused cracks in the walls. 

As the Turkish restoration authorities restore and fortify the ancient buildings, they need exactly the right kind of mortar.

And that’s where Anton Paar comes in.

We’ve all heard of hip implants. But how do biomedical researchers optimize interaction between the surface properties of the implant material and existing tissue to maximize recipient comfort? Cartilage substitutes have to closely approximate natural cartilage – of which the exact properties must therefore be understood.

At the cutting edge of this scientific innovation, Anton Paar’s MCR rheometer was used to conduct friction measurements in a rotational tribology setup investigating cartilage under defined conditions both in oscillatory or rotational motions.

The setup delivers friction measurements over a broad range of sliding velocities and normal forces, and permits systematic comparison of the influence of individual variables, e.g., lubricating fluid, contact pressure, and test duration, on the friction of cartilage.

In this way, Anton Paar is delivering new insights into the mechanism establishing the ultra-low friction of cartilage, thereby helping pioneer the implants of the future.

Using Anton Paar’s MCR302, Ursula Windberger, associate professor of experimental surgery at the Medical University of Vienna (Center for Biomedical Research), compared the blood of camels with that of horses to determine the limits of stamina under physical strain.

The research results show how different blood can be, even if the blood’s tasks are the same for every species. Nature has come up with many variations, and there is still no explanation for this. Camels are designed to save resources. Their metabolism is slower (metabolism produces heat), and their blood has no mechanism to reduce its viscosity when flowing quickly. Therefore, using camels as commercial racing animals by giving them blood and iron supplements is in contrast with their natural orientation.

Interesting. But “so what,” you might say.

Well, using the experience from the analysis of horse and camel blood, research can optimize medication for humans. Moreover, the rheometer will also be used for other research at the institute (e.g., determining the strength of biological fiber materials).

Biomaterials play a critical role in modern medicine. But whether they’re for cardiovascular grafts, dental implants, or artificial implants, these materials have to be extensively tested beforehand to ensure the human body will accept them during a procedure.
