A MultiDrive Rheo-DMA Platform for Extended Analysis

A MultiDrive Rheo-DMA Platform for Extended Analysis

Rheology and DMA can be powerful techniques to characterize polymers and to determine their properties during processing and final use. Detailed information about these properties is crucial for materials development as well as for design of production processes. To carry out these tests, different device concepts have been used so far. While rheometers were designed for the rheological characterization of Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids as well as DMA in torsion, dynamic mechanical analyzers have been mainly used to investigate viscoelastic solids in tension, bending and compression mode.

In the webinar a new measuring device concept is introduced which enables both rheological measurements and DMA on one single device. The device uses an electronically commutated (EC) motor as rotational top drive and can be combined with a moving magnet linear drive or another EC motor, as bottom drive. The concept enables various modes of operation. Besides working in the rheological modes such as separate motor transducer (SMT), combined motor transducer (CMT), counter-rotation and counter-oscillation the device is suitable to perform dynamic mechanical analysis in bending, tension, compression, and torsion.

Various application examples will be discussed to indicate the use of this concept for DMA. In addition, some advanced rheological testing methods that can be performed with the instrument will be highlighted, demonstrating the flexibility and versatility of the device concept for polymer characterization.
