A Multi-Task Rheological Test for Characterization of Adhesive Applications

A multi-task test is presented, consisting of three tests in sequence (time sweep, frequency sweep, and tack test) and providing important information about the adhesion and cohesion properties of two different dispersions.

The characterization of adhesives using rheological measurement methods has become very popular in recent years, especially in the industrial environment. Different adhesive formulations can be readily compared using different types of tests, such as time, frequency, or temperature sweeps. This report shows how the adhesion and cohesion capabilities of the adhesive/substrate system can be evaluated through a combination of rheometric methods. Properties such as shear strength or shear resistance, peel strength or peel adhesion, and tack are investigated for this purpose. As an example, measurement results are shown for two copolymer dispersions used as cardboard adhesives.
