Polarimetric Determination of Amphetamine in Drugs
Amphetamine in drugs can be easily determined polarimetrically according to the AOAC method 954.14 "Stereochemical Composition". This is critically important for the analysis of their enantiomeric purity.
Amphetamine as a chiral substance comes either as levoor dextro-amphetamine. Whereas dextroamphetamine works as a psychoactive drug, levoamphetamine is the less active enantiomer of the stereoisomer. The polarimetric determination of amphetamine is based on the optical activity of amphetamine, which is dependent on the solvent, path length and the concentration.
