E - Rheological characterization of the application behavior of sealants

Relevant for: adhesives, hotmelts, sealants and plastisols

Introduction

Application oriented rheological measurements were carried out on three sealant samples. The measurements were conducted using an Anton Paar MCR rheometer, the Peltier temperature control unit, and a plate-plate measurement system PP25 (ø 25 mm). The temperature was 20 °C for all tests.

1.1 Task From the application it is known that one sealant (S1) has good rheological properties, whereas the other two sealants (S2 and S3) lead to different problems. S2 still flows after the force is removed from the cartridge, while S3 needs a too high force to be pressed out.

1.2 Solution Due to large filler particles and other large structures in sealants, which are highly filled polymer systems, a plate-plate measuring system with a gap size of 1 mm was used.
