Dynamic Mechanical Analysis of Damascus Steel

The use of Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) is not yet widespread in the metal industry, but it offers some interesting insights into material behavior as a function of temperature and applied frequency.

Metals such as different types of steel are very versatile materials which are of technological, scientific and economic importance. The variety of materials and areas of application is almost endless, and so there is much to explore. The use of Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) is not yet widespread in the metal industry, but it offers some interesting insights into material behavior as a function of temperature and applied frequency. In this report it is shown how the dynamic mechanical material behavior of a Damascus steel and the single starting steels can be measured during a hardening process and how this affects the modulus of the steels. Furthermore, it is shown that DMA allows to detect phase transitions in the internal structure of metals with very high precision.
