The investigation of complex flow fields such as shear banding, turbulence, or flow instabilities is of great importance in hydrodynamics or the analysis of mixing procedures. Most rheological theories are based on the assumption that a laminar flow field is present during the measurement. However, in practical applications samples also show a turbulent flow field. The visualization of flow fields via digital Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), sometimes also called Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV), simultaneous to rheological tests is therefore essential.

For some background information on this technique check out our Wiki article „The influence of particles on suspension rheology”

The setup for Particle Image Velocimetry is based on a concentric cylinder measuring system that is mounted on stilts to allow optical access from all sides. While the outer cylinder (cup) is made of glass, the measuring system (bob) is a black-anodized aluminum cylinder to prevent reflections. The PIV cell is available in two configurations, as C-LTD 70/PIV or C-LTD 50/PIV/XXL, supporting liquid temperature control, which is available from 10 °C to 70 °C for the standard PIV cell and from 10 °C to 50 °C for the XXL PIV cell. For easy cleaning the glass cups can be completely removed. Customized PIV systems with other dimensions and materials are available on request.

Completely characterize the complex flow of various materials with a setup in which both the lower outer cylinder (cup) and the upper inner cylinder (bob) are movable measuring systems - for generating flow instabilities in varying degrees. In combination with a rheometer employing two EC drive units, the setup can be used to characterize the flow while only the inner bob is moving (Searle mode), only the outer cup is moving (Couette mode), or the outer and inner cylinders are moving in opposite directions. Install and remove both cylinders easily as they are directly connected without any screws due to the QuickConnect coupling of the drive units.

Detailed flow field analysis for a wide range of materials

Detailed flow field analysis for a wide range of materials

The combination of Particle Imaging Velocity with an MCR rheometer reveals a powerful research tool for the detailed flow field analysis of complex viscoelastic fluids, including the visualization of flow fields during rheological tests, such as shear bands, flow instabilities like Taylor vortices, or startup flow behavior. The rheological behavior of polymer solutions and suspensions is an important influencing factor since solutions and suspensions are involved in many industrial processes. Many liquid products like paints, inks, beverages, medicine, slurries, or shower gels contain various types of particles to achieve the desired final product or to adjust processing properties.
