Behind the scenes of innovation

“Take Tech” is an initiative of the Styrian Business Promotion Agency (SFG) aimed at furthering school pupils’ interest in work fields related to technology and natural sciences.

2588 young people from 70 Styrian schools participated in the Take Tech action week.

12 pupils of a technical college visited the measuring instrument producer Anton Paar in Graz. The globally active high-tech company, a world market leader in many areas of measurement technology, is naturally interested in innovative, creative and most of all technically interested employees. This is why the company is actively invested in motivating the next generation of skilled professionals: Anton Paar is currently training 60 apprentices, offers trainee and work entry programs for higher technical colleges, enters into collaborations on research papers for graduation as well as theses and dissertations and regularly participates in relevant projects. “Initiatives and projects like Take Tech promote interest in technology, facilitate close encounters with companies and the diverse and exciting tasks of technical engineers. This ideally supplements our search for qualified young ‘team enhancers’”, explains Dr. Jakob Santner, Research & Development Manager at Anton Paar.

The pupils participated in “12 hours at Anton Paar”, in which they learned which role Anton Paar indirectly plays in their daily life. The “mouthfeel” of gummy bears and the flow behavior of toothpaste, shower gels, chocolate or ketchup were tested, as well as the concentration of sulfuric acid in batteries or the sugar content of Coca-Cola. The hands-on testing and experimenting in Anton Paar’s training laboratory were just as important as the introduction to a density meter’s inner life.

In addition, the employees of Anton Paar invited the young visitors to the tour “From the first idea to the finished measuring instrument”, where they were given insights into the many exciting tasks of the Styrian high-tech company’s staff. Among these colleagues were sales employees, service engineers, product specialists and managers, R&D employees, customer support agents and many more!

Dr. Jakob Santner: „To be an innovative Styrian high-tech company means to always search for smarter solutions. To do that, we need competent, well-educated and motivated employees who contribute to our success with their curiosity and their ideas. That’s why it’s important to us that young people are not only inspired to take up technical challenges, but that they are also given an excellent education so that they can actually master these challenges later in life.”
