How can hardness measurements, tribology and scratch tests be used in the biomedical industry? Especially for materials like teeth, bone, cartilage, and medical devices…

This webinar will show the use of instrumented indentation testing, scratch testing and tribology for the characterization of teeth, bones and cartilage, dental implants and hip implants. The presentation will show how the nanoindentation technique can help in research on enamel lesions and in local characterization of hardness of teeth, effects of a dietary regime on the hardness of bone or cartography of the stiffness of a rat’s femur cartilage. We will also show how the coefficient of friction between bone and hip implant or between coated hip implant and polymer can be measured. All these applications contribute to a deeper understanding of medical treatments, development and optimization of implants, and their mechanical and surface properties.

The main topics will be:

  • Evolution of the hardness of tooth enamel after various types of lesions
  • Effects of dietary treatment on the hardness of bone
  • Stiffness cartography of cartilage on a rat’s femur
  • Adhesion of a hydroxyapatite coating on dental implants
  • Friction between bone and hip implant: Effects of load and sliding speed
  • Friction of coated hip implants
