Joint Webinar with ACS Monash Malaysia Chapter: Multi-component reactions under microwave irradiation – a green synergy

The combination of microwave irradiation and multi-component reactions in organic synthesis directly addresses two principles of green chemistry: to design for energy efficiency and to reduce derivatives. This approach is particularly efficient and synergistic in drug discovery making it possible to generate diverse libraries of bioactive compounds spending less time, energy, and resources than in sequential reactions or reactions under conventional heating. Focusing on multi-component reactions performed under controlled microwave irradiation in dedicated microwave reactors we will discuss some classical reactions and will also share experience gained in our laboratory.

Mr. Nigel Foong joined Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman as Assistant Laboratory Manager for 3 years. He served in laboratory management and look over analytical instruments of material characterization in spectroscopy (FT-IR,UV-Vis, Polarimeter, Fluorescence, AAS),thermal analyser (TGA, DSC) and X-ray Diffractometer (XRD).

With his varied experience in materials characterization, Nigel is currently with Anton Paar as the Application Specialist supporting customers in rheology and particle characterization. 

Associate Professor, Dr. Anton V. Dolzhenko started his work in microwave-assisted organic synthesis more than a decade ago working at the National University of Singapore.  He continued developing his expertise in applications of microwave irradiation for the synthesis of bioactive compounds and organized microwave-assisted synthesis laboratories in Curtin University (Australia) and Monash University Malaysia.  He is the author of more than 100 publications in journals and 14 book chapters.  His research interests are focused on green approaches to the synthesis of nitrogen heterocycles, particularly utilizing microwave irradiation, designing multi-component reactions, and using green and sustainable media for reactions.
