Surface analysis of biomaterials is a key parameter in assessing and predicting the behavior and biocompatibilty of medical devices. In addition to roughness, chemical composition and hydrophobicity, the surface charge, or zeta potential, is one of the most critical components of medical device characterization. The zeta potential of a biomaterial directly affects initial protein adsorption processes, overall biocompatibilty, integration into the surrounding tissue and the eventual lifetime of the device.
