Rheology and Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis

Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) or Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis (DMTA) is a well-known tool for R&D, optimization, and quality control in the plastics industry. Hence, the polymer industry finds it a necessity to determine the dynamic material behavior of polymers. Typically, it is determined by applying oscillations and monitoring the response of the material. DMA becomes a powerful tool, when used with respect to temperature. DMA reveals much more information about the analysed material than simple temperature dependence of mechanical variables. The measurement can be performed by using various geometry tools such as solid rectangular fixtures for bars or the universal extensional fixture for films. 

This webinar is designed to illustrate common measurement techniques such as temperature and humidity sweeps as well as using their results for R&D, optimization, and quality control in plastics industry. Another focus is avoiding mistakes in sample handling like specimen fixation or specimen cutting.

Viktor Reim has been a product specialist with Anton Paar with a focus on rheology and DMA since 2016. Prior to joining Anton Paar, Viktor received his Masters of Science from the Technical University Kaiserslautern, where he focused on rheology and particle technology ultimately to complete his master’s thesis at BASF in Ludwigshafen, Germany. Viktor also has held an apprenticeship at Papier-Mettlers Filmextrusion as a process technician for polymers.
