Monitoring and Analysis of Particulate Matter

In 2009, the Environment Ministry in Japan established the environmental standard for PM2.5. Now, the press reports the monitored data at each prefecture every day. Further, each local authority is monitoring and analyzing PM2.5 to grab its character.

Introduction

PM2.5 means ambient Particulate Matter having aerodynamic diameters below 2.5 μm, which is suspected to cause damage to respiratory and cardiovascular systems as getting to the lung when inhaled.

Therefore Japan took action in 2009 by establishing environmental standards for PM2.5, and is regulating emissions of this pollutant.

PM2.5 can derive from both natural and anthropogenic sources, like sea salt, soil dust, vehicle emissions, industrial emissions, etc.

Information about the inorganic content contributes to characterize the source. To take measures against pollution a more effective and precise analytical method for multiple analytes is needed.

In this application report the determination of inorganic chemical composition using Multiwave PRO (Anton Paar GmbH), along with “Manual of analysis of PM2.5” published by Environment Ministry, is presented.
