Equal to the Task: Particle Size Measurements in Different Cuvettes

Litesizer™ instruments measure the size of particles using Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS). Measurements can be performed in a wide range of cuvettes that fit most experimental needs, depending e.g. on sample corrosiveness or sample volume availability. Size measurements can also be performed in cuvettes designed for zeta potential measurements, such as the Anton Paar Omega cuvette and Univette. Here we show that the accuracy and repeatability of DLS measurements on different samples (latex microspheres, pigment particles and proteins) did not differ significantly as a function of the cuvette, indicating that all cuvettes provide consistent, accurate and repeatable DLS results.

Dynamic light scattering (DLS) is used to measure the size of small particles in suspension and of macromolecules in solution. DLS measurements are usually performed in dedicated DLS cuvettes. However, some samples need to be measured in cuvettes designed for Electrophoretic Light Scattering (ELS). This is for instance the case for pH-dependent particle size measurements that are coupled with zeta potential measurements.

In order to verify the accuracy and concordance of DLS measurements performed in the different cuvettes, we performed comparative particle size measurements using 3 distinct samples, representing different material types and size ranges.
