Tribological Investigation of Slideway Oils

Slideway oils are used in machinery such as lathes, milling machines, cutting machines, etc. One of the primary functions of these lubricants is to offer smooth and stick-slip free motion of the guide rails in these machines. The current study offers a test methodology that could be used to evaluate the static/limiting friction and boundary friction characteristics of these lubricants. This was done through extended Stribeck tests on a Modular Compact Rheometer (MCR) Tribometer from Anton Paar with a ball-on-three-pins test configuration.

Introduction

Machines such as lathes, milling machines, turning machines, etc. have guide rails or slideways which assist in precise positioning of the tool with respect to the workpiece. This is a continuous process, and to facilitate smooth and efficient functioning, the guide rails need to have a very low limiting1 friction and also no stick-slip at the contact interface during motion. This is achieved by using specialized lubricants known as slideway oils. In addition to low friction and no stick-slip, they are also expected to offer excellent extreme pressure and antiwear performance.
