Flash Point Determination of Contaminated Oil

Flash point values may be used in shipping, storage, handling and safety regulations as a classification property to define “flammable” and “combustible” materials.

In our application laboratory we simulated the presence of gas in an oil sample by adding a small amount of n-pentane to commercially available compressor oil. It was shown that small amounts of contamination in oil already evoke a lower flash point.
