Material Brief: Manganese Dioxide – BET Surface Area Nova 600 | 800 Series

Manganese dioxide (MnO2) powder was analyzed using N2 (77 K) adsorption on the Nova 600 | 800 Series for BET surface area.

Manganese dioxide is a compound that occurs naturally in mineral form or that can be chemically synthesized. It is used primarily in dry-cell batteries or as a component or pigment of ferrites, ceramics, glass, stainless steel, paint, and fireworks, among others. These applications, particularly for the battery industry, require the use of high purity manganese dioxide. Impurities are often removed from the mineral by creating electrolytic manganese dioxide, which is then used as cathode material in batteries.

The Anton Paar Nova 800 was used to measure the BET surface area of electrolytic manganese dioxide. BET surface area is an important property for any electrode material because it represents the interface across which electrons and ions must transfer in the interaction between electrode and electrolyte.
