Take the weight off your shoulders: Different Weighting Models in Laser Diffraction

Laser diffraction is a measurement technique for measuring a wide variety of samples, whether liquid or dry. Using different weighting model not only helps to properly interpret the size of a sample, but enables the user to compare the obtained results with other measurement techniques. In this application report we give an overview and explanation of the weighting models applied in Kalliope Software and how they compare to each other and different measurement techniques.

In order to properly interpret the size of a sample, it is important to understand the differences between the weighting models applied to the measurement data. Three weighting models are implemented in Kalliope software for the Particle Size Analyzer (PSA): volume, number and surface. Each of these models generates a different result, as they represent different physical properties of the measured sample. Especially when comparing measurement results obtained by different measurement techniques it is useful to look at the results using different weighting models.
