Open House at the New Anton Paar Company Building

The fact that the measuring instrument engineer Anton Paar has its company headquarters in Graz has been turned into a solid, more visible truth than ever: The consistent growth of the international company, by now counting more than 1000 employees worldwide, has necessitated further expansion. Space for 250 new workplaces, for presentations and training sessions, and especially for the employees’ children has been created – in a five-story building featuring solar panels and a company kindergarten.  Both the Corporate Design and the latest developments of modern energy-saving construction were taken into account. The Open House day on June 28, 2008, gives visitors from the surrounding area the chance to experience the actively realized philosophy of sustainability as well as the view from the top of one of the highest buildings in Straßgang.
February 25, 2008: the first employees set up shop in the new Anton Paar company building – its five storys well visible throughout Straßgang – in bright, friendly, well-temperated and ventilated rooms. Because, in the words of Johann Scherfranz, Head of Management Services, social and ecological sustainability is a vital agenda at Anton Paar: the thoughtful handling of human and natural resources.

350 square meters of solar panels deliver energy for hot water generation, heating and cooling. The rooms are cooled with water-flushed metal ceilings. The required cooling water is processed by an absorption refrigerator, energized by the solar panels. This refrigerator’s principle is similar to a camping refrigerator’s. Heating and cooling is supported by a ventilation appliance with a heat recovery system. This technically sophisticated setup is computerized via 1700 measuring and regulation points. In addition, Anton Paar has acquired heat-absorbing glass and energy-saving lights for the building. The above-mentioned constructional measures allow the company to save a third of the energy consumption for electricity and cooling and a third of the energy consumption for heating gas.

Opening event

The company is geared to a modern spirit, not only regarding environment-friendly construction, but social questions as well: Anton Paar opens the first company kindergarten in Styria, the kindergarten teachers and nursery nurses of which are employed by the company itself. This solution accords with the corporate philosophy, namely that of assuming as much responsibility as a company can. It all starts in September: Two kindergarten teachers and two nursery nurses (for mornings) and two kindergarten teachers and a nursery nurse (for afternoons) are already looking forward to their nursery and kindergarten groups. The employees’ children, and in some special cases children from other surrounding companies, will soon be running around and playing on the green dragon-shaped climbing hill. Elisabeth Flachs, head of the kindergarten, is thrilled by the playgrounds specially constructed by Anton Paar. The kindergarten opening times are adjusted to the opening times of the company headquarters in Graz: Its year-round, full-time operation is a sigh of relief for working parents.

The company’s consistently strong growth has made the five-story building a necessity. ‘The cooperation with regional construction companies and the official authorities was exceptionally constructive’, says Johann Scherfranz about the planning and building process. ‘We are especially happy about the successful façade design – fully in keeping with our Corporate Design. And the pillars in front of the main entrance resemble the oscillating U-tube, the essential principle of our most renowned measuring instrument.’ The external façade is covered in the corporate colors – red and silver.

And last, but not least: Anton Paar now also has a central laboratory, where customers are presented the entire product range from density measurement to X-ray structure analysis, and which opens up new possibilities for training purposes. The new localities also provide space for larger in-house events: 120 guests can be invited to presentations and seminars.

In any case, the first large number of visitors will arrive on Open House day – on June 28, 2008.
