Synthesis | Nanomaterials | LiFePO4 Nanocomposite Cathodes for Li-Ion Batteries

Efficient synthesis of nanomaterials has been a major research topic in recent years, constituting a bridge between macroscopic materials and molecular structures. The introduction of microwave irradiation to nanotechnology has proven highly beneficial for speeding up the rather time-consuming preparation of such materials by conventional heating methods.

Lithium ion batteries have revolutionized the portable electronics market, but the high cost and safety concerns of the commonly used LiCoO2 cathodes are still an issue.

In recent years, carbon coated LiFePO4 has turned out to be a promising alternative, however the synthesis usually involves long reaction times (5-25 h) in an autoclave at 140-200 °C.

Herein microwave assisted protocols are presented allowing to synthesize LiFePO4/C nanocomposites in a rapid and energy efficient way.

Equipment

The reactions were performed using Rotor 8SXQ80 in Synthos 3000, the predecessor of Multiwave PRO. Using its corresponding Rotor 8NXQ80 the method is reliably adaptable for Multiwave PRO.
