Extensional Rheology

The SER extensional rheology system, developed by Dr. Martin Sentmanat, and the Universal Extensional Fixture (UXF) turn a Physica MCR rheometer into a platform for extensional rheology investigations. The combination of SER or UXF with the convection heating devices CTD 600 and CTD 450 and a Physica MCR rheometer allows extensional measurements on filled and unfilled polymers, solids and melts over a large temperature and deformation range. Further applications are the measurement of adhesion and peel strength.

The principle

  • The SER consists of two counter-rotating drums with intermeshing gears and low-friction bearings
  • Sample is fixed to the drums with clamps
  • Rotational movement of rheometer is directly transferred to the drums, which stretches the sample
  • SER system is used as an accessory to convection heating devices CTD 450 or CTD 600, which ensure perfect temperature control of the entire sample

The advantages

  • Extensional measurements on a conventional rotational rheometer
  • Uniform stretching of the sample over the entire stretching area ensures reliable results
  • Perfect strain and rate control due to the EC motor of the Physica MCR
  • Extensional creep measurements possible
  • Small sample volume
  • System can be immersed to prevent sagging
  • Detachable drums for cleaning or replacement
  • Various drum surfaces available
  • Broad range of additional test setups
  • Mixing device for small sample volumes (XIM) available

Software

  • Display of all extensional rheology data
  • Movie capturing with the Digital Eye camera in the CTD 450
  • CSR and CSS tests including extensional creep
  • Pre-defined workbook templates
  • Pre-defined gap setting profile for easy sample loading
